dailygazette.com/article/2017/04/23/sawyer-fredericks-reflects-on-past-looks-ahead
Two years ago, Sawyer Fredericks was a regular on NBC.
The 16-year-old singer and guitarist was wowing celebrity judges and thrilling fans on the network's reality talent show, "The Voice." With powerful performances on songs like "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow," "Simple Man," "For What It's Worth" and "Summer Breeze" -- among others -- Fredericks won the show's eighth season on May 18, 2015.
Two years later, life has changed -- and in some ways remained the same -- for the soft-spoken teenager who tops his long hair with a derby-style hat.
Fredericks will open this week's Move Music Festival with a Thursday night set at the Cohoes Music Hall. Jocelyn and Chris Arndt and C.K. Flach will also be at the Cohoes gig, which starts at 7 p.m.
Fredericks will perform three shows -- already sold out -- at Caffè Lena in Saratoga Springs May 26-28. And he'll appear at the 2017 Summer Paw Picnic in North Chatham on July 22.
Right now, he's focused on Move.
"I'm very excited, it will be like my first show with my new band, so that's also going to be really fun for me," Fredericks said last week in a telephone interview from his family's Montgomery County farm.
"We're going to be playing some of our older songs," he added, "might play some of the newer songs I used to play solo. It's going to a little more eerie-sounding."
The band includes Arthur Lee Fredericks on bass -- Sawyer's cousin and a musical mentor -- Jerome Gooseman on guitar and Chris Thomas on drums.
Fredericks released his first album, "A Good Storm," last May. He's continuing rehearsals with the new outfit and expects the gang will be back in the recording studio soon.
Earlier this year, Fredericks announced he had parted ways with Republic Records and has become an independent artist. Now managed by mother Kirsten Fredericks, Sawyer is planning a 2017 tour.
He promises "eerie and mysterious" sounds for the new pieces, but personally, he'll still be the same. "It really only comes in the music," he said.
Fredericks loved parts of "The Voice," like meeting John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival on the show. Other parts were a little hard to get used to.
"I wasn't really nervous during the performances," Fredericks said. "The interview stuff, that was very difficult for me because I'm kind of an introvert. That was very new for me and also the idea of being in a competition kind of threw me off a little bit.
"I kind of just forgot about that and didn't really consider it a competition," Fredericks added, "and just kind of enjoyed the music and enjoyed playing with people."
Fans have been a little easier to deal with, even for an introverted singer. People tend to notice a man with such a distinguished look.
"It's a little weird having people come up to me in public," Fredericks said. "Most of the time, it's just, 'Can I get a photo or an autograph?' and normally I say yes to that kind of stuff, unless I'm busy doing stuff with my friends."
That stuff is just hanging out, maybe playing video games. Fredericks is an avowed gamer; his current fave is "ARK: Survival Evolved."
Sometimes, chores on his family's 88-acre farm take precedence over taming and riding video dinosaurs.
"They're actually getting less and less because it's getting out of winter now so there's not as much to do, but during the winter we had to feed the cows and muck all the stalls and give them water if the pipes were frozen," Fredericks said. "We actually had a pretty gentle winter, so the pipes never really got frozen."
Fredericks can see a little irony, a little humor in his situation. Musicians haven't been seriously into the farm life scene since the Woodstock days.
"I always find it funny when I'm going to a performance and thinking, 'I wonder if these people know what I was doing right before I came here, mucking out the barn and giving cows hay and stuff,'" Fredericks said.
The family raises beef, and Fredericks can quickly name his favorite meal. He loves his farm burgers, and he loves them simple. No pickles, lettuce, onion, tomato or special sauces go on lunch or dinner.
"I'm kind of a burger snob, I'm a very picky eater," he said. "I'm a minimalist -- just ketchup and cheese."
So fans aren't handing Fredericks Big Macs or Whoppers. They've been much more creative when they decide to give presents.
"I had some fans, these people gave me a cow," Fredericks said. "I've got some crazy fans, and that's probably one of the craziest gifts."
Fredericks also received a drone, so he can keep an aerial eye on his part of Montgomery County. "It's all satellite, too; you can go as far as you want as long as it's in a good spot and you're in a good spot," he said.
Another unusual token of appreciation was a 1951 Ford automobile, color green.
"I haven't gotten it on the road," Fredericks said. "My dad drives it around a little bit because he loves old cars. Right now, it's just kind of like sitting in the barn."
Another gift did not moo, fly or roll. It came from Fredericks' "Voice" coach Pharrell Williams, and it was just a piece of advice.
"Pharrell said, 'Don't read the comments,' " Fredericks said.
Williams didn't mean reviews. He meant a musician should stay true to his or her self.
"He meant all of it can get in your head," Fredericks said. "You can start catering to your audience instead of yourself."
