So someone asked me to bring this over here.Honestly, I originally made this because I was interested in what Sawyer's was..as people kept mentioning his limited range, but my instinct was that it wasn't so limited. (I was right.)
I think it's actually bigger than this. I think he can sing lower. But it's tough to tell until his voice is done changing, and it may expand even more once he gains control of his falsetto.
Some notes on other people...Koryn has a big range listed, but she was clearly still learning how to use her head voice. She did use it enough (with enough different notes) for me to give her that range...but it's..skeptical. For that reason (lack of headvoice) Kim and Meghan's are a bit smaller than people probably would have thought.
1. Mia Z = 3 octaves 3 notes ( D3-G6 )
2. Koryn* =2 octaves 4 notes and a semi-tone (Db-A5)
3. Rob = 2 octaves 4 notes (Eb3- A#5 )
4. India = 2 octaves 2 notes and a semi-tone (E3 - G#5)
5. Sawyer = 2 octaves 2 notes (F#2- Bb4)
6. Kim* = 2 octaves (E3 - E5)
7. Hannah = 2 octaves (F3-F5)
8. Meghan*= 2 octaves (G3-G5)
9. DeAnna =1 octave 3 notes and a semi-tone ( G3-Dd5)
10.Joshua = 1 octave 3 notes and a semi-tone (C3 -F#4)
11. Brian = 1 octave 2 notes and a semi-tone (F3 - Bb4)
12.Corey = 1 octave 2 notes ( E3-G4 )
In comparison to other winners
Cassadee = 2 octaves (F3-F5)
Danielle = 2 octaves (F3-F5)
Tessanne Chine = 2 octaves, 3 notes and a semi-tone (Dd3-G5)
Josh Kaufman = 2 octaves and 2 notes (D3 -F5)
Craig Wayne Boyd = 1 octave 6 notes (C3-A4)
I personally think Craig's is likely larger than The Voice performances showed, but I don't know any of his music so I'd have a hard time finding any notes that may be lower (which is where I'm questioning.) Although that range is close as his notes are getting weaker.
As compared to other contestants whose ranges I am aware of
Michelle Chamuel = 2 octaves, 3 notes (D3-G5)
Jacquie Lee = 2 octaves, 3 notes and a semi-tone (E3- Bb5)
Amber Carrington = 2 octaves, 2 notes (E3-G5)
Christina Grimmie = D3-D6 (3 octaves)
Chris Jamison = F2-F5 (3 octaves)
As compared to coach's range's whose ranges I can find online.
Christina: 3 octaves 6 notes (C3 - A6 )
Usher: 3 octaves, 2 notes (D2-G5)
Adam: 3 octaves and a semi-tone (F#2-G5)
Gwen: 2 octaves 2 notes and a semi tone (D3 - F#5)
Shakira: 2 octaves 1 note (D3-E5)
Pharrell: 1 octave 7 notes (E2-D5)
So basically, my point is..when people want to talk about technical singing..and they say things like "Sawyer isn't the best technical singer.." and then list range as an example of why...they would be wrong.
Also..there are some things online..things that list studio vocal range (so it's way over what someone's actual range is. I always use this example, but if we used Studio tracks..Michelle Chamuel would have a 6 octave vocal range. #studio magic). I care about live vocals..and I also care about pitch control..(If you go for high notes and can't hit them that doesn't count..)..and use..(Which is another reason I struggle with Koryn's.) Someone like DeAndre Brackensick uses his entire range thorughout his performances. But, for example..Christina Grimmie has his some low notes messing around on video that she's never done in a performance..so in instances like that, 2 octaves or over is actually pretty good. (Hence, why they say The National Anthem is a hard song to sing. It spans 2 octaves.)
Hope everyone finds this interesting
