Singer-songwriter Sawyer Fredericks, the 2015 winner of NBC's "The Voice," will be the headliner when Freedom Park Scotia opens its 2017 summer entertainment program on Wednesday, June 21, it was announced today.
The appearance of Fultonville's Fredericks highlights a season that offers more than 30 nights of free entertainment from June 21 through Aug. 26 with shows scheduled every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday night at 7 p.m.
The amphitheater is located on Schonowee Avenue in Scotia across from Collins Park.
The Jumpin' Jack's "Fireworks Night" will be held Friday, June 30, with the U.S. Waterski Team show at 7 p.m., the Bluz House Rockers at 8 and fireworks when darkness falls.
"Freedom Park's free entertainment would not exist without its community supporters," said Louise Gundrum, Freedom Park board president. "Special thanks go out to longtime supporter Mark Lansing of Jumpin' Jack's for becoming this year's new season sponsor, and 1st National Bank of Scotia for their opening-night sponsorship. It is our show sponsors, media sponsors and board members who volunteer their time and talents that keep Freedom Park alive."
NBC's "The Voice" highlights the nation's strongest vocalists who compete for a recording contract, with the help of celebrity coaches. Fredericks, a member of Pharrell Williams' team, went on to win season 8 and has put out five albums.
"We are thrilled to have a national recording artist from our own backyard as this year's concert series opener. It is such an exciting opportunity for our community," said Cathy Gatta, Freedom Park's booking and marketing director. "We are excited Sawyer will be part of our season, as well as all of the other wonderful local talent we are presenting this year. We have seven new groups joining us, and some annual favorites returning once again. This is going to be a fun season."
Along with Fredericks and Bluz House Rockers, other new additions are contemporary country group Grit-N-Whiskey, 60s/70s tunes of Jeanne O'Connor & the New Standard, punk/indie rock band American Runaways, jazz/swing band Dylan Perrillo Orchestra and Zydeco with Big Easy PlayBoys featuring Captain Squeeze.
Freedom Park is bringing back regional favorites Screaming Orphans, the AudioStars, the Refrigerators and The Zucchini Brothers.
Parking is available a short distance away at the following locations: off Beach Road, Beukendaal Temple on Schonwee Avenue, and the First Reformed Church on Route 50. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or a blanket. A dance floor is located just below the stage.
The series is offered by season sponsor Jumpin' Jack's Drive In and media partners B95.5 FM, Gazette Newspapers and Albany.com. Free shows are made possible through the support of business sponsors the Village of Scotia, Town of Glenville, Freedom Park memberships, a grant from the Schenectady County Initiative Program and audience donations.
