Feature film Austria 1955
The power-conscious Archduchess Sophie has decided that her son, Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, must finally marry for the sake of the State. Her carefully chosen choice falls on Helene, called Nené, the eldest daughter of her sister Ludovika. The young emperor is not thrilled that the marriage will be arranged over his head, but he complies. The couple are supposed to get to know each other at a meeting in Bad Ischl, to which Ludovika arrives with Nené and her younger sister Sissi.
In order to escape the hectic preparations for the court ceremony, Sissi goes fishing and happens to meet the emperor - whom she literally "fishes". Franz Joseph is immediately fascinated by the natural grace of the unknown young woman and arranges a secret meeting with her. When he meets her again at the state reception in honor of his birthday, he learns that the beautiful stranger is Nenés sister Sissi.
During the festive souper, Franz Joseph only has eyes for her - and, to the great surprise of the court, announces his engagement to Sissi. The strict archduchess is horrified, but Franz Joseph prevails against his mother for the first time and finally leads Sissi to the altar.
More about the film
The lavishly furnished and emotionally staged story about the eccentric Austrian Empress Elisabeth, known as Sissi, is one of the great successes of German-language post-war cinema with over 6.5 million cinema-goers. Successful director Ernst Marischka pulled out all the stops of splendid development and staged a glamorous dream finale that was previously only known from Hollywood cinema. The only 16-year-old Romy Schneider and the still young Karlheinz Böhm, the worldwide success of "Sissi" paved the way for an international acting career. The first shows the second and third film of the famous Sissi trilogy from the 1950s with "Sissi, the young empress" and "Sissi - years of destiny of an empress".
